Mandarin for Cantonese-Speakers

--Course Objective:

Mandarin for the Cantonese speaker course aims to develop participants’ competence in understanding and speaking Mandarin (pǔ tōng huà). This course is devised specifically for students who are Cantonese Speakers, and concentrates on pronunciation and basic sentence structure using Hànyǔ Pīnyīn to enable students to learn standard Mandarin.

This course will help students to speak Mandarin (pǔ tōng huà) with confidence. There are three levels in the course, and each level is divided into three modules. Students will make rapid progress towards fluency with a course at their level, tailored to their needs. Every student’s progress is monitored from day one and they receive regular feedback throughout the course. Students are impressed at just how quickly their confidence grows as their pronunciation skills improve, and they are immersed in real-life situations and interactions within a Chinese - speaking environment.

  Mandarin for Cantonese-Speakers Level 3

 Pre-requisites: Complete Mandarin 1, 2 or approximately 20 to 30 hours of prior study.

 - reinforce pinyin sounds

 - revision on measure words

 - revision on money, size, colors

 - talk about transportation

 - talk about the Chinese and western food

 - going to a restaurant

 - seeing a doctor

 - talk about the weather and climate

 - tour in Beijing, sightseeing

 - asking people’s age in the appropriate ways

      and respond to them

 Learning Outcomes:

 - handle pinyin sounds better

 - know more measure words

 - express the different transportation

 - know about Chinese food and western food

 - explain your problem to a doctor

 - understand the weather

 - asking people’s age in different ways

 - answer the questions in a sophisticated way

 - have better travel/tour knowledge of Beijing

  Mandarin for Cantonese-Speakers Level 4

 Pre-requisites: Complete Mandarin 3 or approximately 30 to 50 hours of prior study.

 - revision on place names in Beijing

 - revision on expressing the past experience

 - travel by trains in China

 - booking train and air tickets

 - inviting people to a dinner

 - saying goodbye to people

 - seeing people off

 Learning Outcomes:

 - express your past experience

 - know how to travel by train in China

 - book a train ticket and air ticket

 - invite people to a lunch and dinner

 - say goodbye to people at train station or airport

 - use more Chinese proverbs

 - know the story or cultural background behind the proverbs

 - handle verbs and their different complements
